Android is an open-source software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. Android's mobile operating system is based upon a modified version of the Linux kernel. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android. It's open-source software stack consists of Java applications running on a Java-based, object-oriented application framework on top of Java core libraries running on a Dalvik virtual machine featuring JIT compilation.

Android has a large community of developers writing application programs ("apps") that extend the functionality of the devices. There are currently over 150,000 apps available for Android. Android Market is the online app store run by Google, though apps can also be downloaded from third-party sites. Developers write primarily in the Java language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries.

Raspberry pi

The Raspberry Pi: A new sensation in the world of electronics. This ultra low cost and smallest form factor Linux based computer is expected to revolutionize the computing world. Pi can be used to play games or control robots or act as a media centre with AirPlay. The board is a great educational tool. While it was originally designed for being employed in schools to teach programing, today it is part of countless engineering projects.

About the Raspberry Pi:

This is a credit-card-sized single-board computer developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the intention of stimulating the teaching of basic computer science in schools. The Raspberry Pi has a Broadcom BCM2835 system on a chip (SoC), which includes an ARM11 700 MHz processor, Video Core IV GPU, 512MB of RAM. It uses an SD card for booting and long-term storage.

PROPELLER CLOCK

Propeller clock is totally based on a moving led row. This led row is rotating at a rate superior to human's eye remanence, making a dot matrix which seems to float in the air. A motor spins the "propeller" and a small microcontroller keeps track of time and changes the pattern on LEDs with exact timing to simulate array of LEDs. It is an illusion, "but it works nicely".

CAN-SAT Satellite Designing

A CANSAT is a small satellite that just fits inside a Soda CAN. It is a Pico-satellite purposefully for the study of Troposphere.

The CANSAT - Satellite designing & launching workshop is a first of its kind in India. It aims to equip basic embedded knowledge on satellite to engineering college students. The workshop will teach the basics of what a satellite is and how they can be designed using the basics of electronics and micro-controller programming. We promise to give students the satisfaction of being involved with the end-to-end life cycle of a complex engineering project, from conceptual design, through integration and test, actual operation of the system and concluding with a post-mission summary and debrief.

“There is no other workshop in INDIA which relates space system design with electronics”

This workshop would essentially consist of following parts:

  • Mechanical Testing
  • Breadboard and Circuit Design
  • Soldering the circuits
  • Programming the firmware
  • Integration, and testing of data

The members have to work together to finish the design of CanSat by Day-1.

The session on Day-2 will focus on launching the CanSats and post-flight review given by each team-member describing their results.

Post Flight Review:

The Can-Sat will be judged based on the following parameters:-

  • Robustness – If the CanSat was able to survive the descent.
  • Functionality – If the CanSat satisfied the objectives before the flight operations.
  • Results – How accurate the results were after the landing.
  • Analysis – The teams are required to analyze in a four minute presentation (in brief) about what failed and what worked, and in case there was failure of certain objectives, a detailed failure analysis is required.
  • Time Management – Consideration would be given to the teams who finish faster and work in synchronization to the designated time-slots.

The teams are required to follow these criteria while working on their Can-Sat models.

Mission Objective:-

The mission of the competition in workshop would be to design a satellite that will fit inside a Jam - Jar and will collect information of about 511 packets spread across a time interval of 10 minutes. The information that it will collect would be dependent on its direction and location of movement during its descent after the launch of the CanSat.

Each CanSat will have a parachute with which it will descend at a velocity between 3m/s to 7m/s.

The circuit has to be designed for the following objectives:-

  • Air Temperature
  • Light Intensity measure in Voltage
  • Packet Number

All circuitry has to fit into the Pet-Jar and all values will be stored in the EEPROM of the Micro-controller. The data recovered will be retrieved by the judge from the microcontroller and would be given to the team for further analysis and presentation.

Students of all the branches are going to be benefitted by this unique workshop. All the branches of engineering are in some way or the other are headed for aerospace.

All the teams will be going through completion all the time during the workshop. In this way they can enhance their performance and efficiencies.

  • Pet Jar: This will act as the base for the satellite
  • Nylon Parachute: Designed for descent rate of around 3 m/s to 7 m/s based on the airflow.
  • Plastic Wires: Given to tie the parachute with the Pet-Jar that will house the Can-Sat.
  • Solder Iron.
